In response to the domestic murders of women in Surrey, SFWS took a leadership role in the Save our Daughters Coalition in 2007. The purpose of the coalition was to mobilize a coordinated community response identifying and addressing the needs of South Asian victims of domestic violence and their families using a culturally competent model that is sensitive to the realities of women’s lives. In April 2008 the coalition launched a public awareness campaign which involved attending community events and raising awareness around the issue of domestic violence. While providing outreach services, community members and service providers told us that clients needed to access services that were safe, culturally competent and from a central location. November 2009, in response to the demand for legal services with overlapping issues of family law, immigration and poverty law, we opened South Fraser Legal Resource Centre, an additional location, in Newton.
