Become a Member

South Fraser Women’s Services Society memberships are issued on a calendar year basis (January - December). This means that even if you become a member or renew your membership part way through the year, the membership will still be up for renewal during the month of January in each calendar year.

Membership includes:

  • Invitations to special events throughout the year
  • Access to our lending library
  • Quarterly Newsletters

Some good reasons to be a member of South Fraser Women’s Services Society:

  • Adding your voice to others in the struggle for women’s equality
  • The satisfaction of supporting and helping women to reach their potential
  • Provide South Fraser Women’s Services Society with information on issues that impact women’s lives and suggestions on how we can respond to them.

A large membership base is a pre-requisite to receiving donations from some foundations - donations we need to run our FREE programs and services. Join us in showing the government and other funders that our community understands and supports the issues that are essential to women’s equality, including freedom from violence.

Become a Board of Director

SFWS is governed by a Board of Directors.

We actively seek women from our community who are interested in women’s issues with a desire and commitment to donate their time and expertise in order to promote and maintain an organization focused on women’s issues in the South Fraser Region.

Women who have the ability to work with a vision, possess leadership and or/ fiscal management skills and aspire to participate in the stewardship of a non profit society are encouraged to apply.

Board members attend a monthly meeting and occasionally participate in committee work.  A minimum of a 1 year commitment is requested.

All Board members are required to be members of the society in good standing.

Volunteer

About our Volunteers

We are a volunteer driven organization without them, we would not be able to provide the number of programs and services we currently offer.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to use the skills and talents that women have acquired during their life. It also provides a space for women to learn new skills and gain a greater knowledge of the issues faced by women in our society.

Volunteer opportunities are currently available in the following areas: Reception; Clothing Exchange; Laundry and Shower Facility; Community Events; Fundraising; Library; Resources and Statistics; Hot Lunch preparation; Peer Crisis Support and the Speaker’s Bureau.

Volunteer Training

Initially all volunteers participate in Level 1 training (5 sessions) which deals with our values and beliefs and introduces volunteers to community resources, plus four practicum sessions on the front desk. On completion of Level 1, volunteers can choose the category they wish to volunteer in: receptionist; clothing exchange; statistics; library; hot lunch; or community event volunteers. Volunteers interested in becoming crisis peer support workers then continue with Level 2 training which consists of 15 sessions and four volunteer meetings. This training is in-depth, challenging, intense and rewarding. It covers basic counselling skills, knowledge of women’s issues, looking at our own personal values and beliefs, community resources and referral skills. It encompasses issues arising from relationship abuse, childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault, poverty, separation and divorce, grief, depression, custody and access and transitions in life. Volunteers must complete four practicum shifts before doing a solo shift. A six-month commitment is expected from volunteers. There is a $25-$50 sliding scale fee for the training. Women with English as a second language are encouraged to apply.

Volunteer Opportunities

If you wish to become a volunteer, download and fill out our Volunteer Application Form, then contact us for more instructions and information.

Volunteer training takes place Monday mornings 9:30 am - 12:00 pm. View the calendar.
